A truck driver is not an easy profession and the first year is particularly hard because there are so many things to know and learn. The right knowledge and information will help you get accustomed to the job, make you feel comfortable with the truck you’re driving while also providing you with the confidence you need to drive safely.

Whether it’s learning to maneuver the truck, getting accustomed to the new lifestyle that comes with this job or learning to find delivery locations successfully there’s a lot to take in during your first year as a trucker. Here are a few things to be aware of to help make the learning process a little easier:

  1. The more experience you have, the more comfortable you will be so spend lots of time practicing behind the wheel. Your experience will set you apart from the other drivers and get you the position you’re after. You will also become a better driver and you’ll feel a lot more relaxed while you’re on the road and won’t stress as easily. Additionally, drivers with more experience will make more money so this aspect is key.
  2. There will be a lot of seat time during your first year as a trucker because you will have to be trained by another driver. You’ll be driving around with this person for a while and having two drivers in one truck is not always easy because it is a small space that you’ll have to share for long periods of time. You will have to learn to spend your workdays with this person no matter how difficult it may be until you’re ready to be on your own.
  3. The pay is not great during the training period so you may have to take a little bit of a financial hit at the beginning. Once you complete the training program successfully your pay will increase but it can take a while until you’re on the road alone so be prepared for lousy pay when you first start.
  4. You will be away from home so you’ll have to adjust to this reality which is a part of the job. Truckers can be on the road for several weeks at a time and it’s not always an easy thing to do, especially if you are in a relationship or have a family. This is part of the new lifestyle that you and your partner will have to get used to so be prepared to deal with this aspect if you plan on making a truck driving your career.
